At 32-years-old Serena Williams is the oldest tennis player to make it back to number 1 on the world tennis rankings. For the third time in her career, Williams has been voted the Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press (AP).
This year Williams won 11 titles including her 17th Grandslam Championship. She had a 34 game winning streak, and took home some $12.3 million in prizes, a record for women’s tennis.
“Whenever I lose, I get more determined, and it gives me something more to work toward. I don’t get complacent, and I realize I need to work harder and I need to do better and I want to do better — or I wouldn’t keep playing this game.”
