41 year-old Mavis Amponsah is facing deportation from Israel after she failed to convince officials there that she was a lesbian. The Israeli government say Amponsah who claims she will face persecution for being a lesbian if she returns to Ghana is not lesbian enough because she “did not seek out the company of other women,” which is, “contrary to what might be expected of someone fleeing persecution for a sexual preference.” The government there says she previously dated a man and so this disqualifies her from seeking asylum as a lesbian.
