From the Archives: Kenya’s polygamy law is a year old, are you a co-wife without your knowledge?

If it is a polygamous marriage it is best when it is done in the open like this!

It has been a year since the President of Kenya signed into a law a Polygamy Bill that allowed men to marry more than one wife. Contrary to custom which previously dictated that the first wife must give consent, the new polygamy law allows men to marry as many women as they choose without the consent or approval of the previous wife. In essence, a Kenyan man can marry another woman without having to inform his current spouse.

If you’re over there in Kenya and looking to get married or if you are married to a Kenyan man and he decides to go home on vacation, please be advised that he could be attending his new marriage to your future co-wife.

While we are cool with polygamy, we believe that all parties involved should be fully aware of all other parties in the marriage.  What would you do if you found out your husband was already legally married to another? Would you stay and share or pack up and go?

Polygamy still going strong in Kenya one year later
